Delhi-Dehradun Expressway: Latest News and Updates for 2024
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is one of those initiatives by the Government of India which is receiving significant attention recently. This expressway is also known as Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun Expressway which will be functional by May 2025.
The Delhi-Dehradun expressway is an NHAI-approved (National Highway Authority of India) project and it connects Delhi to Dehradun via Saharanpur. It has gathered the interest of people for its potential benefits -as this expressway is developed to reduce the travel time from Delhi to Dehradun by just half.
Currently, it takes 5 hours or more to commute from Delhi to Dehradun but this expressway will reduce it to just 2.5 hours. Hence, this expressway will reduce the travel time to half, reduce congestion, and also open new opportunities for residential and commercial properties around this expressway.
According to media reports, NHAI is all set to make the first phase of the expressway functional by the end of June 2024. The first phase of the Delhi-Dehradun expressway will connect Akshardham in Delhi to Bhagpat in Uttar Pradesh.
The Overview of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is an under-construction project currently and the total length of this expressway will be 210 km. This expressway will connect 3 states, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, and the number of planned lanes is 6. However, it can be extended to 8 lanes whenever there will be a need.
Currently, the estimated cost of developing the project is INR 13,000 Crores and the completion date of this expressway is given by NHAI in May 2025. However, once the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway opens, it will be able to accommodate around 20,000 to 30,000 vehicles on the route every day.
The project is scheduled to be completed in four phases. Let’s find some more details about the four phases of the project –
Phase 1: From Delhi to Uttar Pradesh
The Delhi-Dehradun Expressway will begin at Akshardham Temple in Delhi’s Pandav Nagar and it will terminate at the Eastern Peripheral Expressway in Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh. Phase 1 of this expressway will be at least 32 kilometers long where 18 Kilometers are raised.
In Phase 1 of the Expressway, there will be a total of 12 lanes. Out of 12 lanes, 6 lanes are designated for the principal roadway and the remaining 6 lanes are allocated to the service roads for improving intra-connectivity.
Phase 2: From Baghpat (UP) to Saharanpur (UP)
Phase 2 of the Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun Expressway will extend from the Baghpat (UP) to the Saharanpur (UP) Bypass. However, to provide easy access to the nearby communities, the second phase of the expressway will have an additional two lanes and four interchanges.
Moreover, the administration has also planned to construct 60 underpasses to facilitate traffic flow further. NHAI also intends to build some convenience facilities every 25 kilometers, such as a rest station or hotel for the benefit of motorists.
Phase 3: From Saharanpur (UP) to Ganeshpur (Uttarakhand)
The starting point of phase 3 of the Delhi-Dehradun expressway is the Saharanpur Bypass in Uttar Pradesh and it will link Ganeshpur, which is close to Sunderpur, in Uttarakhand, to Biharigarh. This segment of the expressway will be about 40 kilometers long and will be featuring a total of six lanes.
Phase 4: From Ganeshpur (Uttarakhand) to Dehradun (Uttarakhand)
The last segment of this meticulous expressway development will connect Ganeshpur to Dehradun. This is however the final phase of this project and it will go via the Daat Kali Devi Tunnel. This segment of the expressway will be constructed in the middle of a massive forest region, and therefore it includes –

1. The Bhagpat Section of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway is Almost Completed"May 6, 2024": The first segment of the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway (approximately 32 km long) which connects Delhi to Baghpat in Uttar Pradesh is almost completed. The first phase of this Expressway is expected to be operational from June 2024. This is called the “Baghpat Section of the Delhi Dehradun Expressway”.
Going by the words of the officials of NHAI, the construction of all 4 phases is in the concluding phase. The distance between Delhi and Dehradun will be reduced from 235 to 213 Km only, once the construction of this most sought-after expressway is over.
The best thing about this expressway is that the construction of this expressway is being done without harming wildlife. This is an interesting fact to know that the Delhi-Saharanpur-Dehradun expressway will have the longest wildlife corridor. May 16, 2024: According to a recent update, the finalization of the fourth phase of the Delhi Dehradun expressway is also underway and the final phase of this Expressway is expected to be operational by July 2024.
