The Largest Airport in India, Jewar International Airport, is being developed in four distinct phases. It has been designed to accommodate the growth of both domestic and international passengers and cargo.

This airport is projected to be one of India’s largest Airports once completed, however, Noida International Airport is expected to become operational in 2024. Additionally, it will also serve as an aviation hub for the National Capital Region (NCR) and numerous adjoining districts of Uttar Pradesh.

The Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) chief executive officer (CEO) Christoph Schnellmann has given an update on the progress of construction work and said that more than 25 buildings will come up at the site which will include –

  • The passenger terminal
  • Air traffic control (ATC) tower
  • Office blocks, sewage
  • Water treatment plants
  • Electric substations, etc.

He further added that the passenger terminal is now up to the first floor, and the working on the fourth floor of the ATC tower is also on. The runway work is on across the entire length and the airport is on track to become operational by the end of 2024 as one terminal and a runway is built with a passenger capacity of 12 million per year.

The Upcoming Noida International Airport

The Noida International Airport in Jewar, Uttar Pradesh is the largest Airport in India that spans an expansive land area of 5,000 acres. The development of this International Airport is being carried out in four distinct phases and the development of this project began in June 2022.

In July 2021, the Swiss Airport Company named “Zurich Airport International AG (ZAIA)” signed a contract with “Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL)” to undertake the construction and operation of the airport.

However, the Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL) has been incorporated to develop this international airport in Noida. The NIAL is a 100 percent subsidiary of the project concessionaire ZAIA (Zurich Airport International AG).

The Zurich Airport International (ZIA) is a leading global airport operator that has a long and successful history with 75+ years of experience.

According to Schnellmann, the CEO of YIAPL, India is one of the key markets for Zurich International Airport, where they’ve developed Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore in 2008.

Further, the Noida International Airport Limited (NIAL) which is the governing body of the project is overseeing the joint venture project and consists of numerous authorities as stakeholders including –

  • The UP government
  • The Noida Industrial Development Authority
  • The Greater Noida Industrial Development Authority
  • The Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA), etc.

This project presents a significant example of the infrastructural growth of India.

The Noida International Airport is situated approximately 72 km away from the existing IGI airport in New Delhi and it is around 40 km away from Noida. This makes the location of the airport a strategic location that aims to enhance the domestic and international connectivity for Delhi-NCR, Noida, and Western Uttar Pradesh.

As per Schnellmann, currently, there are over 5,000 workers who are fully mobilized at the site.

Although The International Airport will be ready to handle domestic and international flights from day one of the start of operations, the development authorities are expecting domestic to be more dominant initially, and international will pick up as they move ahead.

Noida International Airport (NIA) is going to be a world-class airport with numerous efficient facilities for cargo, airlines, hotels, and commercial partners. However, these developments aim to offer short turnaround times along with low operating costs for the airlines.

Not only that, but this project will also become an international transit hub and will have a multi-modal cargo hub (MMCH) along with two MROs (maintenance, repair, and overhaul), which again makes it a significant hub for both domestic and international requirements.
